EU Foreign Ministers will discuss new measures against Russia on the sidelines of the summit G20 – NEWSru.com

EU Foreign Ministers will review the situation in Ukraine on the sidelines of the summit “Big Twenty” together with US President Barack Obama. This was announced at a press conference in Brisbane outgoing President of the European Council Herman Van Rompuy.

“The current increase in tension is of deep concern. We must by all means avoid a return to full-scale conflict”, – quotes the head of the European Council TASS. “EU Foreign Ministers will meet in Brussels on Monday, which will assess the situation in Ukraine. They will consider possible additional restrictive measures,” – said Van Rompuy.

Asked agency, whether he admits the possibility of imposing new sanctions against Russia, Herman Van Rompuy said: “We will continue to use all means at our disposal diplomatic mechanisms, including sanctions.”

He called on Russia “to comply fully with the Minsk Agreement” and “stop sending military forces to the Ukraine, as well as to bring those who are already in the Donbas.” “If Russia will actively contribute to the reduction of tensions in the Ukraine, and to fulfill its international obligations, we can roll back our sanctions,” – said Van Rompuy.

In the middle of the week, German Chancellor Angela Merkel explained that the EU does not intend to impose new sanctions against the Russian sector. It is only to expand the list of persons to whom the visa restrictions will be extended.

According to Merkel, the main task is now improving the humanitarian situation in connection with the approach of winter and the achievement of the armistice.

Sectoral economic sanctions against Russia were introduced by the EU after the aggravation of the situation in Ukraine in the summer of 2014. They raised the defense industry, as well as a number of companies with significant state participation, which were deprived of sources of long-term financing. There were also restrictions on the supply of sensitive dual-use technologies and oilfield equipment.

The black list of persons who are subject to a ban on entry into the United States and the European Union, and whose assets in foreign banks are subject to freezing, began to compose soon after the Crimea to Russia. It includes Russian officials and politicians, businessmen close to Putin, a former Ukrainian leadership, as well as leaders of the Crimea, LC and DNR.
