CEO of VTsIOM: turnout will be at 20% – RIA Novosti

MOSCOW, Sept. 14 – RIA Novosti . The head of the Russian Center for Public Opinion Research (VTsIOM) Valery Fyodorov told about prichinaah low voter turnout in the Moscow City Duma. He predicts that it will be about 20%.

“I guess that the turnout in Moscow will reach 20%. A month ago VTsIOM conducted research on the preparations for the elections. I announced the figures that we got. Then about 53% of respondents in Moscow reported that they are likely to go to the polls, of which about 30% said they just go to the polls. My personal prediction was about 20-25%, “- said Valery Fedorov.

According to him, in September, the turnout is always lower than in March or December. “Apparently, September – time is not for the high turnout. If it is decided to postpone the single day of voting for another term, we can expect that voter turnout will be more,” – said Fedorov.

The second reason – it changes in the structure of elections in Moscow. “For the first time in a long time we hold elections to the Moscow City Duma only on single-member constituencies. We have not yet learned to turn so structured elections in larger political arena,” – said the head of VTsIOM.

Another reason – a change in the political situation in the country, patriotic enthusiasm and interest in foreign rather than domestic policy. “The domestic political agenda disappeared, its place was taken by foreign policy, so elections to regional and local authorities across the country today are without any tension. And the mood of protest and fell significantly decreased. Opposition now in crisis,” – said Fedorov.

Also, low turnout at the elections of deputies to the MHD due to the role of the city legislative assembly in the city management and decision-making. “This role is inferior to the importance of the role of the mayor, so objectively turnout in Mosgodumu should be lower than the turnout in the mayoral election last year,” – said the head of VTsIOM.
