Day of State Flag of Ukraine – RIA Novosti

Day of State Flag of Ukraine is celebrated on August 23. This holiday was approved in 2004 by the decree of the President of Ukraine Leonid Kuchma.

Earlier, the State Flag Day was celebrated only in Kiev at the municipal level. The capital of this festival is celebrated on July 24.

On this day in 1990, the blue and yellow flag was raised over the Kiev mayor’s office.

According to the Constitution, the national flag of Ukraine is a rectangular two- equal horizontal stripes: top – blue and the bottom – yellow.

The value of blue and yellow colors on the flag are traditionally treated as a combination of pure, peaceful, cloudless sky, stretching over yellow grain field – a symbol of peaceful labor and welfare

The yellow-blue colors symbolized the Kyivan State even before the Christianization of Rus. After the invasion of the Tatars the symbolism for a time disappeared, but eventually revived on the arms of most Ukrainian cities: almost all of them framed in yellow and blue.

The first documented use of yellow and blue was the coat of arms of Lviv land. Banner “Leopolskaya” (Lviv), which depicted a “yellow lion, rising on a rock, on an azure field,” used the troops back in 1410 during the Battle of Grunwald against the Crusaders.

In the XVI-VII centuries Zaporizhia Army used the banners of different colors, but the XVIII century began to be used mainly in blue and yellow.
