Moscow. September 27. INTERFAX.RU – Patriarch of Moscow and all Russia Kirill, signing the petition to the public for a ban on abortion, expressed his position as a citizen and a priest, said the Russian Orthodox Church.
“by Signing the petition, the Patriarch supported the initiative of the public, which once again wants to draw attention to the scale of the problem,” – said “Interfax” on Tuesday evening the head of the Synodal Department for Church and society and the media Vladimir Legoyda.
He stressed that the signing by the Patriarch of treatment does not mean no change in the position of the Church as a whole to abortion, nor changes its position in the dialogue with the authorities.
“as for the position in General, it is well known that this attitude is very negative, and it is shared not only by all Orthodox, but also representatives of other traditional religions. Any priest who is asked to sign such an appeal, he would have signed. So the Patriarch as a citizen, as a priest found it possible to put this letter signed,” – said the Agency interlocutor.
“as to our cooperation with public authorities in this issue, our fundamental position is that first step on the path to what ever, I hope we will come to the complete disappearance of abortion, should be the removal of abortion from the compulsory health insurance system. It seems to us at this stage is extremely important and fundamental,” – said Legoyda.
As he said, in addition to the topics that people are opposed to abortion “actually pay them is another important topic: the presence of abortion in the compulsory health insurance system approves abortion as a social norm, and that’s something to agree is impossible.”
In turn, the head of the Patriarchal press service priest Alexander Volkov said about the established position of Patriarch Kirill about abortion, pointing out that the signature of the Patriarch is among the hundreds of thousands of other signatures on the mentioned address.
“his Holiness has repeatedly said that its concern was the situation with abortions in Russia” – recalled the priest on Tuesday to “Interfax-Religion”. According to Volkov, “all of the items contained in signed by the Patriarch of the petition for the prohibition of abortion, in General, of course, separated by any normal Orthodox Christian.”
At the same time, he admitted that some paragraphs of the petition for the abortion ban, which was signed by the Patriarch, “can sound dramatically and need some discussion from the point of view of their implementation”. “These items are grouped and formulated in a way that might look together rather sharply, but this does not mean that they do not reflect the views of the majority of Orthodox Christians”, he stressed.
Earlier it was reported that the Patriarch on Tuesday, after worship in the Church of the Archangel Michael in the village of Belousovo in Moscow met with the participants of all-Russian public movement “For life” and signed initiated by a petition for a ban on abortion. He thanked the participants for their efforts and blessed them.
the Authors mentioned the treatment that has been agreed with the Patriarchal Commission on family matters, also speaking for a ban on surgical and medical abortions, contraceptives with abortive effects, assisted reproductive technologies, “which is an integral part of human dignity, the humiliation and murder of children in the initial stages of embryonic development”, in favor of assistance from the budget for pregnant women and families with children at not less than the subsistence minimum.
currently, in many temples of Russia on the initiative of the movement “For life” is collecting signatures for the legislative protection of human life from the moment of conception. All the initiators of the action intend to collect a million signatures. At the moment, collected more than 300 thousand signatures
In June of this year the Interreligious Council of Russia, which includes leaders and representatives of traditional religious communities of the country, called to take abortion from the system of compulsory medical insurance. Earlier a similar proposal to lawmakers addressed the Patriarch.
