The summit of the European Union adopted sanctions in connection with the situation in Syria – RIA Novosti

MOSCOW, Oct 21 — RIA Novosti, Pavlov Svyatoslav. the EU on the first day of the summit in Brussels did not accept sanctions against Moscow and Damascus because of the situation in Syria, without mentioning the opportunity in the text of the final document.

ahead of the summit, Bloomberg reported that the draft of the final resolution deals with the imposition of sanctions against Russia over Syria. A source in the EU told reporters that the major countries of the European Union support the mention of the possible introduction of restrictions, but to approve the document requires a consensus.

Press Secretary of the Russian President Dmitry Peskov said that the Kremlin did not comment on the possible imposition of sanctions over Syria, noting that it is necessary to wait for the final resolution of the leaders of the European summit. President Vladimir Putin said that sanctions against Moscow over Ukraine, or Syria, specific problems can not be solved, it only is a policy of containment of Russia and its development.

At the summit the EU did not mention the possibility of imposing new sanctions opinions on foreign policy, however, a number of EU leaders did not rule out this possibility in response to further steps taken by Damascus and Moscow.

Earlier, Dmitry Peskov said that the Kremlin does not see a subject for the imposition of sanctions against Moscow on Syria, because Russia is the only country that legitimately fighting terrorism on the territory of the Arab Republic. In turn, the Minister of foreign Affairs Sergey Lavrov, expressed hope that common sense will prevail.

no One demanded sanctions

Chancellor of Austria, Christian Kern at the summit, the EU announced that none of the participating countries are not required to impose sanctions against Russia because of the situation in Syria.

“Tonight, no one demanded sanctions,” said Kern on the first day of the summit, which was held in Brussels.

“I think this day was important for decisions regarding the strategy towards Russia. We made today an important step forward,” added the Chancellor.

While earlier, European Parliament President Martin Schulz said that among the leaders of 28 countries-EU member States gathered Thursday in Brussels, there is no consensus as to the need of application of new sanctions.

Russia has repeatedly said it wants to develop its partnership with the EU, however, forced to respond to hostile actions of the European Union, which first imposed sanctions against Moscow after the annexation of Crimea and events in Ukraine.

Tusk said that the EU leaders held a wide-ranging discussion about Russia. Speaking about the evaluation of her actions from the heads of the European Union, he once again repeated the accusations on controversial issues in the Russian Federation, which Moscow has repeatedly called unproven.

French President Francois Hollande also possible to impose sanctions to the further actions of Moscow and Damascus in Syria.

“At this stage of the sanctions related to the Russian actions in Syria, was not adopted. If there are new massacres and bombing, we must begin to impose sanctions against responsible citizens of Syria. In the case of a continuation of the bombing, Russia could also obtain the answer from the EU,” said Hollande.
