Russia’s Permanent representative to the UN Vitaly Churkin noted “more pragmatic” approach in the UN security Council to the situation in Aleppo.
“it was Definitely a much more pragmatic discussion than some that we have seen in recent weeks. The discussion was focused on to to grasp the pulse of Lausanne and to move forward — both from the point of view attempts to return to the ceasefire, to boost humanitarian aid to Syria, particularly around Aleppo, and try to advance the political process,” Churkin said to journalists (quoted by “RIA Novosti”).
At the same time, according to Churkin, the separation of the so-called moderate opposition fighters “al-Nusra” (banned in Russia) “continues to be extremely important.”
At the same time, Churkin stressed that we are not talking about changing positions, but “this may reflect the fact that people are starting to judge the situation around Aleppo more comprehensive”.
Russia’s permanent representative also noted that the introduction of the “humanitarian pause” lasting more than 8 hours are required to conduct additional coordination. “It seems to me that a longer, such as 48-hour or 72-hour [break], will require some mutual agreement,” — said the diplomat.
Earlier, the defense Ministry said that Russia from October 20 is ready to enter in Aleppo “humanitarian pause”, which will operate from eight in the morning until four PM. Thus, it will ensure the evacuation of wounded from Aleppo.
U.S. state Department spokesman mark Toner, in turn, said that the plan Minoborony proposed “too late”.
