As told Matvienko, in 2014 Kiev has openly declared its intention to join NATO, the Alliance did not give any guarantees that Ukraine will remain non-aligned state. Therefore, according to Matvienko, the appearance of NATO warships to the Russian port in Crimea was quite real.

“a few months before our port in Sevastopol would have stood the NATO ships. This Russia could not allow”, – said the speaker of the upper house of the Russian Parliament. According to her, without the intervention of Russia “Kiev attacked the Crimea” and their actions “we have prevented the bloodshed,” TASS reports.

Matviyenko said that the events of 2014 around the Peninsula cannot be called annexation, as in Crimea are mostly Russians and Russian-speaking people. “They were afraid for their lives, organized a referendum and voted unanimously for annexation to the Motherland – Russia”, – said the politician.

we will Remind, the law on Ukraine’s refusal from non-aligned status was signed by President Petro Poroshenko in December 2014. In accordance with the provisions of the military doctrine of the Square, the cooperation with NATO is among the highest priorities.

again Crimea became a Russian region on the basis of a referendum held on March 16, 2014. For reunification with Russia voted more than 95% of the inhabitants of the Peninsula. Ukrainian authorities and Western countries have called this step “annexation”, then the US and the European Union imposed restrictive measures against a number of Russians and Russian companies.
