INTERFAX.RU – Russia’s Supreme court on Wednesday upheld the verdict of the Ukrainian citizens Mykola Karpiuk and Stanislav Klychu convicted of 22.5 and 20 years of imprisonment on the case of participation in combat actions against Federal forces in the first Chechen campaign as part of the organization UNA-UNSO (banned in Russia).

According to the Russian investigators, and Klyh Karpyuk were members of the extremist organization “Ukrainian national Assembly – Ukrainian national self defense” (UNA-UNSO) and in late 1994 and early 1995, fought against Russian Federal forces in the armed forces of the self-proclaimed Chechen Republic of Ichkeria. According to the investigation, they participated in the fighting against Russian troops in Grozny, in particular in the fighting in the area of “Minute” and at the Presidential Palace.
Earlier, the Minister of justice of Ukraine Pavel Petrenko said that his Agency will send a request for the issuance of Karpyuk and Cliche home immediately after the sentence comes into force, i.e. after the proceedings in the appellate instance.
In turn, the Russian justice Ministry, “Interfax” reported that the transfer of prisoners Ukraine will be resolved in accordance with the Convention on the transfer of sentenced persons and the criminal procedure code of the Russian Federation.
