2 May 2016, 16:29 | Nord Stream | Weber | The European Parliament
Chairman of the center-right European People’s Party Manfred Weber criticized the project of construction of the “Nord Stream-2».
According to the politician, the project is contrary to the interests of European foreign and security policy, since it will increase Europe’s dependence on “Gazprom”. He also said that the construction of the pipeline should not be financed from Europe, and expressed concern that the “Nord Stream-2″ will deprive Ukraine Euro 2 billion a year that the country receives for gas transit through its territory, reports Financial Times.
The politician called on the European Commission not to rely on Russian gas, and seek to increase supplies through Turkey from the producers in the Caspian region, as well as from Iran and Iraq. FT notes that the application of Weber is important because it plays a significant role in the internal politics of Germany, which is considered to be a major supporter of the “Nord Stream-2″ in Europe.
“Nord Stream-2″ – a joint project of the Russian “Gazprom” and foreign companies, which aims to lay a gas pipeline from Russia to Germany under the Baltic Sea bypassing the Eastern and Central European countries, which will save on fees. Project cost – about $ 11 billion
