BALI (Indonesia), 10 Nov — RIA Novosti, Mikhail Tsyganov. the head of the Russian delegation to the 85th General Assembly of the Interpol, the chief of National Central Bureau (NCB) of Interpol of Ministry of internal Affairs of Russia the General-the major of police Alexander Prokopchuk elected Vice-President of the organization, told RIA Novosti a source in the delegation.

the Assembly takes place on the Indonesian island of Bali.

“a Citizen of Russia not only occupied the position of Vice President of Europe for the first time since the country’s accession to Interpol more than a quarter century ago, but was elected 127 votes for and ten against, and eight abstentions” — said the Agency interlocutor.

the Interpol General Assembly also elected the new leadership of the organization: the successor of French women Mireille Ballestrazzi, which occupied the position of President since November 2012, was Deputy Minister of public security Meng Hongwei.

Addressing the participants of the voting, Prokopchuk expressed the hope that his more than thirty years experience of service in law enforcement will be sought after by Interpol. Throughout his career he was involved in the fight against economic and tax crimes, money laundering and legalization of criminal incomes which, according to him, is closely related to countering the financing of terrorism, cybercrime, counterfeiting and corruption.

In the Interpol’s new Vice-President took an active part in the activities of a number of working groups and the European Committee of this organization, and two years ago was elected a member of its Executive Committee. Prokopchuk also participated in the process of internal consultations with representatives of countries-members of Interpol from all regions of the world.

“In terms of our ever-changing world where we face new global threats, I am fully aware how important it is for Interpol to continue to stay several steps ahead (of criminals), and intends to do everything in my power to help Interpol to achieve their full potential,” said Prokopchuk.

As stated by RIA Novosti source in the Russian delegation, election Prokopchuk indicates a high level of cooperation of the Russian police and foreign law enforcement agencies.

During the four days of the session was adopted a budget, elected new leadership, amended a number of normative-legal acts regulating the activities of Interpol in the field of organization of the international investigation, and a decision was made to develop to the next General Assembly clearly defined the criterion of membership in Interpol, he said.

“the support of the participants of the session received the Secretary General of Interpol Jurgen Stock (Jurgen Stock) entitled “Interpol-2020″. It is proposed after taking office two years ago, the reform of the organisation aimed at increasing its efficiency and optimizing its activities, getting rid of inappropriate functions in the interests of all almost 200 members,” he added.

Interpol will also continue to develop cooperation with other international organizations, in particular, the new General agreements were concluded with the United Nations Office on drugs and crime and the International anti-corruption Academy, said the representative of the Russian delegation.

Interpol is the second after the United Nations according to the number of members of the international organization and the largest organization of law enforcement, which has 190 member States.

the Soviet Union became a member of Interpol on 27 September 1990 at the 59th session of the UN General Assembly. Since 1991, the Ministry of internal Affairs of the USSR began to operate of Interpol. After the collapse of the Soviet Union, the Russian CS was the successor to the Federal Bureau.
