Carl Gustaf Mannerheim was born in 1867 in the Grand Duchy of Finland (part of Russian Empire), from 1887 to 1917, he served in the Russian army, participated in the Russo-Japanese war, he commanded several units in the First world war. After the Bolsheviks came to power, Mannerheim went to Finland, which declared independence from Russia, and in 1918 was appointed commander of the Finnish army. During the Winter war and the Second world war was led by the Finnish army in the battles against the Soviet Union. August 4, 1944, Marshal Mannerheim became President of Finland.
