Russian foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov
Despite Russia’s withdrawal from the agreement with the US, Moscow will not use plutonium for military purposes, said foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov. This Russian commitment, he said.
Moscow under any circumstances will not be of military use plutonium covered by the agreement with the United States, from which Russia emerged this week, said Russian foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said in an interview “the First channel”, reports “RIA Novosti”.
According to him, the agreement provides for either party to exit the agreement in case of fundamental change of circumstances. Although Russia withdrew from the Treaty, Moscow stated that “the plutonium will not be covered by this contract, to use for military purposes, under any circumstances,” said the foreign Minister.
“This is our commitment. But it is pointless to cooperate when the other side plays slightly in a one-sided game and does not fulfill its obligations. This, by the way, the question of negotiability,” — concluded Lavrov.
October 3, Russian President Vladimir Putin signed a decree that suspended the agreement with the United States on plutonium disposition. The decision was taken in connection “with a fundamental change of circumstances and threats to strategic stability in a hostile action” in the United States against Russia, stated in the document.
Press Secretary of the Russian President Dmitry Peskov explained the signing of the decree the fact that the implementation of obligations of the United States “did not meet the provisions of the document [the agreement]“. Peskov said that Russia is “alone” comply with the provisions of the agreement and does not intend to continue.
foreign Minister Lavrov called then the suspension of the agreement “forced” measure because, according to him, the last time Washington made a number of “unfriendly towards Russia’s steps”. As an example, the Minister reminded about the sanctions against Russia and building up the infrastructure of NATO near its borders.
Then in the state Duma was introduced the bill to suspend the contract, in which the conditions for the resumption of the agreement was called, in particular, the lifting of all us sanctions, and a reduction in military infrastructure of the United States.
White house spokesman Josh Ernest said that the US is disappointed with Russia’s decision.
5 October, Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev signed a decree on the suspension of a bilateral agreement with the US on cooperation in research and development in nuclear and energy spheres. This decision was made because of the restrictions on U.S. cooperation with Russia in the field of nuclear energy, explained in the document.
