Russia does not support the initiative of elaborating a Convention on the prohibition of nuclear weapons, said Director of the Department for nonproliferation and arms control, the Russian foreign Ministry Mikhail Ulyanov; according to him, solidarity in this matter all members of the “nuclear five”.

during the current session of the UN General Assembly will consider the resolution on the prohibition of nuclear weapons, which will launch the negotiations on a Convention banning nuclear weapons.

“All this is reminiscent of the nonsense because non-nuclear countries will ban it, than not have, and holders of nuclear weapons — almost everything I understand, the negotiations do not intend to participate”, — said Ulyanov situation to reporters.

Such steps, he said, can cause damage to the Treaty on the nonproliferation of nuclear weapons (NPT), “because it creates two parallel mode — one recognizes the legitimacy of nuclear weapons in the hands of the five, and another agreement kind of puts it into question”. “Of course, this is largely political propaganda campaign, I think, quite unpleasant. No one counted, the consequences for the NPT,” — said Ulyanov reporters at the UN.

On the question whether the support of such other Convention countries officially possessing nuclear weapons, the representative of the Russian foreign Ministry said, “No, of course.”

“the Five permanent members of the Security Council, the five nuclear powers on the non-proliferation Treaty (NPT — ed.) — here she is, in fact, unified. I think the same can be said about India and Pakistan. They were not involved in the working of the open-ended working group in Geneva, have not participated in the voting on the recommendation”, — the Russian diplomat noted.
