Direct election of the mayor of Kaliningrad cancelled – REGNUM

Kaliningrad, November 24, 2016, 18:11 — REGNUM Deputies of the Kaliningrad regional Duma today, November 24, voted for the bill abolishing the direct election of the mayor of Kaliningrad.

the Essence of the changes: the head of Kaliningrad was elected the representative body of the municipality from among candidates presented by the competitive Commission by results of competition.

Correspondent REGNUM specifies that the initiator of the bill is the acting Governor of the Kaliningrad region Anton Alikhanov. This was originally the head of the region proposed to divide the posts of mayor and head of administration.

However, the faction “United Russia” in regional Duma has decided to “fix” Alikhanov in the appointment of the mayor of Kaliningrad. According to the Deputy Oleg Urbanica, under the amendment, the head of Kaliningrad and also heads the local administration.

Elections of the mayor of Kaliningrad was supposed to be September 2017. Currently, the city is the ninth year led by Belarus.
