Putin: joint command in the Arctic will start from December 1 – RIA Novosti

Sochi, November 24 – RIA Novosti. Joint Strategic Command of the Russian armed forces in the Arctic will become effective on December 1 on the basis of the Northern Fleet, said Russian President Vladimir Putin.

Now Russia has four joint strategic commands: West, East, Central and South.

“A decision was made to improve the composition and structure of the armed forces. For example, on December 1 of the current year on the basis of the Northern Fleet must begin to act a new joint strategic command in the Arctic zone, “- said Putin at a meeting on Monday.

Russian Arctic has the most powerful of their fleets – the North, which included a strategic submarines. Overall, however, in terms of military defense of the region considerably inferior to other areas of the country, due to both historical and climatic and geographical reasons.

In February, a senior official of the General Staff told RIA Novosti that in connection with the end of the year the Ministry of Defense may be a new structure: the Northern Fleet – United Strategic Command. In addition to the fleet, it will include the Arctic Brigade, part of the Air Force and Air Defense. Their task will be to protect the interests of Russia in the Arctic. Particular attention will be paid to strengthening border security in the region.
