Russia refused to help the United States to ensure the safety of nuclear facilities, writes the American newspaper The Boston Globe. According to the publication, on December 16 in Moscow bilateral negotiations of Russian and American representatives, which was attended by about 40 people, including representatives from the Pentagon, State Department and the US Department of Energy. During the meeting, a document was signed in which the Russian party shall notify the US refusal to participate in the protection of their nuclear arsenals, including the largest warehouses weapons-grade uranium and plutonium.
The talks have put an end to the initiative, which has become symbol of warming relations between the two countries that were enemies during the Cold War, and in which the United States invested more than two billion dollars, the newspaper said. Sam Nunn said that the gap interaction between Moscow and Washington in the field of nuclear safety “increases the risk of terrorist attacks with catastrophic consequences,” and expressed hope that the cooperation will be resumed.
