Bad new sanctions against Russia says not only the vice-chancellor of Germany, Sigmar Gabriel (center ), but Chancellor Angela Merkel

Tighter sanctions against Russia could further destabilize the situation and plunge the country into chaos, vice-chancellor of Germany, Sigmar Gabriel.

“We want to help resolve the conflict in Ukraine, and not to put Russia on its knees” – Gabriel said in an interview Sunday with the German newspaper Bild am Sonntag.

On Monday in Berlin should a meeting between representatives of the Foreign Ministry of Ukraine, Russia, Germany and France, dedicated to the Ukrainian crisis.

It is known that Russia in these negotiations would represent the second Director of the CIS Department of the Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs Viktor Sorokin, Ukraine – Director of Policy and Communications Ukrainian Foreign Minister Alexei Makeev.

After the Russian annexation of the Crimea in March 2014 the European Union, the United States and some other countries have introduced several packages of sanctions against Russia. The most painful sanctions were imposed after the start of full-scale armed conflict in eastern Ukraine.

The West accuses Russia of military assistance to the separatists in eastern Ukraine and in direct military involvement in the conflict in the Donbass. The Russian authorities have denied these charges.

Russia – at the table and not on his knees

In an interview with Bild am Sonntag Sigmar Gabriel, who is also the Minister of Economy of Germany and is headed by the Social Democratic Party, said that Berlin “has never aimed to bring Russia to the political and economic chaos”.

“Those who want it, cause as a result of a much more dangerous situation for the whole of Europe” – he said, recalling that Russia is a nuclear power.

The purpose of sanctions – to force Russia to the negotiating table, said Gabriel.

Some in Europe and the United States would like to see Russia on his knees, but “it is not in the interests of Germany and Europe as a whole,” stressed the German Vice-Chancellor.

The Russian authorities – including President Putin – have repeatedly stated that they consider sanctions hostile and counterproductive.

One of the packages of Western sanctions actually closed to Russian companies with state participation, access to foreign markets funding. In addition, the US and the EU imposed sanctions against businessmen from the immediate vicinity of Vladimir Putin.
