March 12, it became known that the Department of Investigation Ministry of Internal Affairs of Ingushetia initiated another – the third – the criminal investigation into the attacks on journalists and human rights activists on the border of the republic of Chechnya. This is the part 2 of Article 162 of the Russian Criminal Code ( “Attack the purpose of stealing other people’s property, a group of persons with the use of arms”). The penalty under Article provides for up to 10 years in prison. Previously, the crime was characterized by milder items on hooliganism and deliberate destruction of another’s property.
The attack on the staff of the Committee for the Prevention of Torture (KPPP) and journalists, who were traveling in Grozny, was committed on March 9 at the border of Ingushetia and Chechnya. People pulled out of the van and beaten, and then set fire to their vehicle. Eight people were injured, four of them, including journalists from Sweden and Norway, have been hospitalized. All of them were taken under guard around the clock.
