NATO wants a conflict with Russia, with the intervention of the Alliance in the war in Syria can only worsen the situation and lead to new victims. This was stated by NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg in an interview with Bild am Sonntag.
the interlocutor of the edition approved the EU decision to extend sanctions against Russia. “Economic sanctions send clear signal to Russia that it pays dearly for violation of international law and the change of borders by force,” he said.
At the same time, the NATO General Secretary called for a dialogue with Russia. “The message of the meeting of the Council Russia-NATO on Monday, is this: NATO does not want escalation, does not want cold war”, — said Stoltenberg.
Speaking about the situation in Syria, NATO Secretary General called it a “terrible human catastrophe”. “Sometimes right to use force — for example, in Afghanistan. But sometimes the damage from military intervention is more than the benefit. On Syria, NATO partners have come to the conclusion that the use of military force even more would worsen this terrible situation,” he said.
Mr Stoltenberg said that the military intervention can lead to even larger regional conflict and greater loss of innocent people, but can not solve all problems. “If we react to every problem, every humanitarian disaster force, then, eventually, the world will be even more wars and sufferings,” he said.
Commenting on the liberation of Aleppo by the Syrian army, the NATO Secretary General expressed confidence that this victory of Damascus does not automatically mean the end of the war in Syria. “Assad will continue to fight against their own people. The fight against ISIS [is prohibited in the Russian terrorist group "Islamic state"] will continue. But perhaps Aleppo will demonstrate the need for a political settlement,” he said, urging all parties to agree on a cease-fire.
