Crimean Tatars appealed to the UN General Assembly calling to recognize the Peninsula as part of Russia – TASS

UN 8 Feb. /Offset. TASS Oleg Zelenin/. Russia gave the UN appeal of the Crimean Tatar public organizations “kyrym birligi” with an appeal to recognize the annexation of Crimea by the Russian Federation not contradicting norms of international law, to condemn the blockade of the Crimea and to achieve the lifting of sanctions imposed by Western States. Treatment attached to the letter sent by the permanent representative of Russia to the UN Vitaly Churkin, President of the 71st session of the General Assembly, Peter Thomson. The text of the letter published on the UN website.

As noted in the statement adopted at the Congress of public organization in Simferopol on 10 December last year, “violent coup d’etat in Ukraine” in 2014 “was a serious event from the point of view that he posed a threat to freedom, life and security of the population of Crimea”. In this situation, the Crimean authorities have taken “the right decision” to withdraw from Ukraine and joining the Russian Federation, the document says. The organization recalled that international law “does not impose any restrictive rules regarding matters of secession,” and also pointed to the inadmissibility of substitution of this concept, which implies an exit of the subject from the state, the annexation (forcible annexation of the state of the other state).

In this regard, “qırım birligi” urged the UN General Assembly “to recognize the Declaration of independence (secession) of the Republic of Crimea and the free accession to the Russian Federation that do not contradict the norms of international law”, “to denounce the policy of economic, commercial and financial embargo against the Russian Federation, the Republic of Crimea and city of Sevastopol” and to remove the imposed political and economic sanctions.

After forceful removal from power of President Viktor Yanukovych in February 2014 in the Crimea and in the East of Ukraine began mass protests. The authorities of Crimea and Sevastopol March 16, 2014 held a referendum in which the majority of the population voted for reunification with Russia.

on 27 March 2014 UN General Assembly at the initiative of Kyiv, adopted a resolution calling the referendum illegal and calling on countries and international organizations not to recognize the Crimea a part of Russia. In December last year, Ukraine has achieved acceptance in the General Assembly another resolution condemning alleged which in the Crimea are a violation of human rights.

meanwhile, the appeal of public organization “kyrym birligi” it is noted that in Ukraine “for the years of independence there was not a single law aimed at rebuilding the political, economic, social and cultural rights of the Crimean Tatar people, which encouraged the government to commit acts of tyranny and violence against the returnee Crimean Tatars, disregard their rights in the political, spiritual and socio-economic development”.
