General Prosecutor’s Office acknowledged the illegal transfer of Crimea to Ukraine in 1954 – BBC

Russian Prosecutor General’s Office acknowledged that the transfer of Crimea to Ukraine in 1954 did not correspond to the Constitution of the Russian Federation and the Constitution of the USSR. This was reported in response Deputy Prosecutor General Sabir Kehlerova the request of party chairman Sergei Mironov.

«Neither the Constitution of the RSFSR or USSR Constitution did not provide for the powers of the RSFSR Supreme Soviet Presidium of the USSR and to address issues to change the constitutional and legal status of the Autonomous Soviet Socialist Republic, members of the union republics, “- the document says.

«In view of the above, taken in 1954 by decision of the RSFSR Supreme Soviet Presidium and the Soviet Union on the transfer of the Crimean region of the RSFSR in the Ukrainian Soviet Socialist Republic, did not correspond to the Constitution (Fundamental Law) of the RSFSR and the Constitution (Fundamental Law) of the USSR” – Prosecutor General’s Office said in a statement.

In Crimea, March 16 held a referendum on the status of autonomy, during which more than 96% of voters were in favor of joining the peninsula to Russia. Russia and the Crimea on March 18 signed an agreement to join the Republic and the Federation of Sevastopol.
