In Buryatia, an international conference on security – Russian newspaper

Co-operation in the fight against extremism and terrorism, and other current international issues were discussed in Ulan-Ude, the head of Security Councils and the management of special services of 65 countries, as well as the delegation of the United Nations. This is the sixth meeting of high representatives in charge of security issues, which is held under the auspices of the Russian Security Council.

– The agenda of this conference – serious topics, requires a balanced, consolidated approaches – said in greeting participants of the conference, Vladimir Putin, read out by Russian Security Council Secretary Nikolai Patrushev. – First of all, the fight against narcotics industry, terrorism and extremism, strengthening the biological, food and information security.

According to the president of Russia, these traditional, filled with practical content of the meeting testify to the desire of many countries to develop a partnership on a wide range of safety issues, exchange information and strengthen professional contacts.

One of the most representative delegations, which arrived this year in Buryatia – China. We arrived as representatives of Japan, Israel, India, Switzerland, Serbia, Spain, Greece, South Africa, Cuba and many others.

However, in this year’s conference for the first time there was a delegation from the US and most major European countries. However, it did not affect the high-level event organization. In addition to counter-terrorism issues, participants discussed such important topics as “Fresh water as a strategic resource for sustainable development of international security”, “The role of Russia in ensuring biological safety at the international level” and “Formation of the system of international information security.” On the topic of fresh water, the participants were not only able to discuss it in the hall, but also on the shores of the unique lake Baikal.

As noted by Nikolai Patrushev, the water is no less important strategic resource than hydrocarbons. According to him, today wars are fought for the possession of oil and gas, but tomorrow will continue the struggle for access to freshwater, which is getting more and more popular. According to the Secretary of the Russian Security Council, one of the main objectives of the international community, just have to be to prevent the threat of military conflict over access to water.

By the way, during a bilateral meeting Nikolai Patrushev and Politburo member, Chairman of the political and the legal commission of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China Meng Jianzhu, discussed the fight against terrorism, “color revolutions” and interference in the internal affairs of sovereign states.

Also, the Russian-Chinese consultations were devoted to cooperation in the sphere of justice, law enforcement, public information and security.
