Director, Non-Proliferation and Arms Control of the Russian Foreign Ministry Mikhail Ulyanov said in an interview to “RIA Novosti” that Russia has a right to accommodation, if necessary, nuclear weapons on its territory, including on the territory of Crimea.

«Russia certainly has the right to place, if necessary, their nuclear weapons anywhere on their national territory, including on the Crimean peninsula “, – said Mr. Ulyanov while commenting the statements of Foreign Minister of Ukraine Pavel Klimkin after claiming Russia’s readiness to place in the Crimea missile Tu-22M3 long-range aircraft that can carry nuclear weapons .

According to Mr. Klimkin, the decision of Russia will be the most violation of international obligations. “As can be appreciated, it is considering Crimea as Ukrainian territory, he believes that the deployment there of Russian nuclear weapons would be detrimental to non-nuclear status of Ukraine. The idea is quite interesting in the sense that it can be regarded as an indirect attack against the United States, as well as Belgium, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands and Turkey, on whose territory the US nuclear weapons. Following the logic of the Ukrainian minister, this is a direct violation of the non-nuclear status of the listed European countries. I will not dispute this, but I will say that in the case of dealing with the Crimea, of course, is not the case “, – said Mr. Ulyanov.
