Russia and Syria have signed an agreement to expand base in Tartus – Lenta.ru

the agreement between Russia and Syria, on which the base of the Russian fleet in Tartus will be expanded and modernized. The text of the agreement signed on 18 January, published on the official portal of legal information.

According to the text, the parties agree to an extension of the base (it is defined by the attached maps), as well as the need for the development and modernization of its infrastructure.

at the same time in Tartus can be no more than 11 warships from Russia, including ships with nuclear power unit. External security of the coastal borders of the base assigned on the Syrian side, the defense object, sea, and air, into the Russian.

720 point of logistics (e & p) was deployed in Tartus in 1984 by the decision of the Politburo. Before, in 1971 and 1977, the USSR concluded with Syria the agreement on the use of the port of warships, but did not have their buildings. E & p was used for operations of the 5th operational squadron of the Soviet Navy in the Mediterranean sea.

In 1990-e years of e & p in Tartus has not been minimized in contrast to a significant part of the Soviet foreign locations, however, existed in abbreviated form. The Ministry of defence since 2009, regularly announces plans to expand its presence in Tartus and modernization of its infrastructure. In the fall of 2015 the port began dredging and construction of piers.
