On Thursday in Moscow priest died human rights activist, former State Duma deputy Gleb Yakunin. He was 80 years.
«Father Gleb died today after a long illness. The human rights community

Gleb Yakunin was ordained a priest of the Russian Orthodox Church (ROC) in
1962. In 1965, together with Nicholas Aeschlimann, he became the author of Open
letters of Patriarch Alexy I of the persecution of Soviet power in the church and relationships
church and state, after which was banned in the service.
In 1970 Yakunin actively engaged in human rights work, published
materials about human rights of believers in the USSR. In 1979 he was arrested and
convicted for anti-Soviet agitation. Amnestied in 1987 and restored in
the service.
In 1990, Yakunin was elected deputy of the Russian Federation, a member of the
Supreme Soviet of the RSFSR, served as chairman of the Committee on Freedom of Conscience.
In 1991-1992 participated in the Parliamentary Commission on State Emergency Committee, which
published archival materials about the alleged cooperation of individual
hierarchs of the Moscow Patriarchate with the KGB.
In 1993, the defrocked priest for refusing to submit to the demands of
non-participation of Orthodox clergy in the parliamentary elections, in 1997, excommunicated
church. In 1993-1995 he was a deputy Gleb Yakunin State
City Council.
