President Barack Obama urged not to rush to the expansion of US sanctions against Russia because of its actions in Ukraine, because it will not affect Vladimir Putin and can cause differences between Washington and Europe.
Some US Congressmen are considering new sanctions against Moscow, but Obama said, speaking on Thursday at a meeting of the Council on exports, that the current US actions in unison with Europe at the end of all make Russian President Vladimir Putin to reconsider their actions in Ukraine.
“The idea that we can simply expand sanctions on and on, and eventually Putin change his mind – I think it’s a miscalculation,” – said Obama.
According to him, the recognition that Europe and the United States will take a common position for a long time, eventually forcing Putin to take a strategic decision.
“If they see that there are no cracks in the coalition, then over time you will witness how they say that the cost of sanctions on their economies outweighs any strategic benefits they receive, “- Obama said.
Existing sanctions
The United States and the European Union have imposed sanctions against Russia after the Russian annexation of the Crimea in March this year.
Then, the United States and the European Union announced new sanctions package in connection with the Russian intervention in the conflict in eastern Ukraine.
The Russian authorities deny direct military involvement in the conflict in the Donets Basin, as well as military assistance to the separatists.
Earlier in December, US President Barack Obama during a round table with business representatives said that Russian President Vladimir Putin holds a “nationalist, facing the past policy that frightens neighbors Russia and damaging its economy”.
